The Rich History of île de Salagnon
île de Salagnon boasts a fascinating history that adds to its appeal. Before 1880, the island was just a set of rocks called “les roches aux mouettes.” During the construction of the railway from Le Bouveret to Evian, engineer Joseph d’Allinges transformed these rocks into an island. He surrounded it with a wall and named it Salagnon. French painter Théobald Chartran later acquired the island and built a Florentine villa. He also hosted grand events with fireworks. Over the years, the island changed hands, including a Russian count, a Zurich merchant, and American Mary Shillito. In 1947, Baron Pflüger of Zurich bought it. The small port of Le Basset, built in 1950, improved its accessibility. Today, ile de Salagnon and its villa are classified as cultural property of national importance.
